With looks deriving from 2017’s Viziv Performance Concept and all-new internals, Subaru has unveiled the 2022 WRX: the next generation of a legendary rally car. Subaru has promised improved performance and technology, in addition to revealing an all-new GT trim.

As for performance, Subaru has put a new 2.4 liter boxer engine under the hood, making 271 horsepower at 5600 RPM and 258 lb-ft of torque from 2000-5200 RPM. Don’t let the numbers fool you; the flatter torque curve means that peak power is made through a wider part of the RPM range, leading to better performance. The engine is turbocharged, with the turbocharger being equipped with an electronically controlled wastegate and air bypass valves, enhancing responsiveness and acceleration.

As is typical of Subaru tradition, the 2022 WRX comes with Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Active Torque Vectoring. For the purists, this powertrain comes with a standard 6 speed manual transmission, though an automatic “Subaru Performance Transmission” is an option. Subaru claims the automatic transmission has quicker upshift and downshift times, with an adaptive shift control system that “can quickly respond to perform rev-matching downshifts under braking, maintain the ideal ratio through corners, and respond faster on corner exit.” Gear ratios have been optimized for improved response and acceleration. If the idea isn’t against your principles as a car enthusiast, the automatic option may be worth a test drive.

The shift to the Subaru Global Platform promises superior ride and handling performance, with a claimed 28% increase in overall torsional rigidity and 75% increase in suspension mounting point rigidity. Despite the looks being reminiscent of a crossover, the platform also lowers the center of gravity height. These improvements, paired with a longer suspension stroke and the rear stabilizer being mounted directly to the body, ensure handling that is precise and stable.

Suspension is track-tuned, with a new dual-pinion electric power steering system for a more connected experience behind the wheel. The new power steering system is designed to give a quicker response and a more natural, precise steering feel. Wheel options are limited to 17 inch or 18 inch wheels, equipped with summer performance tires and four-wheel ventilated disc brakes.

Exterior & Interior

The looks of the 2022 Subaru WRX are very heavily lifted from the 2017 Viziv Performance Concept. As was mentioned previously, though the crossover-like wheel arches may prove to be a controversial design, do be assured that the WRX does not ride like a crossover. The brand’s signature grille is front and center, with compact LED headlights complementing the appearance. Of course, just so you don’t forget it’s a WRX, Subaru has kept the traditional hood scoop. Though we wish the ridiculous wing of previous generations was kept as well, a tasteful rear lip spoiler was put in its place.

The design is, of course, functional as well. Air outlets contribute to reduced front tire lift and body sway for a more stable ride. An aerodynamic texture is applied to trim and the molded wheel arches for reduced wind resistance. The under-engine cover includes the same aerodynamic texture, along with a geometry to increase downforce at the front.

The interior comes with obligatory red stitching and faux carbon fiber accents, though the application of these design cues appears to be rather tasteful. Power windows with auto up/down on the driver and passenger side, a 60/40-split fold-down rear seat, power door locks and power side mirrors are all standard equipment. The STARLINK multimedia system features a large, high-resolution touchscreen with controls for audio, HVAC and other vehicle features. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported – long gone are the days of your phone’s OS being left out. For a safer drive, EyeSight Driver Assist technology is standard on all trims with automatic transmission.

For audiophiles, Subaru offers an optional 11-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. The audio system is equipped with GreenEdge amplifier technology for superior sound quality with reduced power consumption. Harman’s Clar-Fi algorithm is also included, which restores details from compressed audio formats. It’s certainly the option to go for, should you be a stickler for audio quality.

GT Trim Level

New to the WRX for 2022, the GT trim level is the top-of-the-line trim on offer. It’s equipped with electronically controlled dampers that adapt to the driver’s preferences with comfort, normal, and sport settings. Additional options to configure steering feel, damper settings, and SI-Drive settings are included.

The interior has been appointed with Recaro bucket seats for improved bolstering and support. The seats are wrapped in black Ultrasuede, a synthetic suede-like material. The driver’s seat includes 8-way power adjustment. Exclusive to the GT trim, 18-inch alloys are paired with 245/40R18 summer performance tires.

Conclusion

Subaru’s 2022 WRX continues the model’s legacy of aggressive, practical design, now with some creature comforts to boot. Though Subaru has not yet provided a starting price (nor fuel economy figure), the current generation WRX starts at $27,495. Should the 2022 WRX start at a similar price, it will offer some serious performance per dollar. It’s a sports sedan worth keeping an eye on as the release window nears and more information gets revealed.
